Angelo Merendino: Observing and Reacting
Opening Reception: Friday September 13 5:00 to 9:00pm
Artist Gallery Talk: Saturday September 14 1:00pm

Akron native Merendino picked up the camera during a stint as a musician in Nashville, before returning to Northeast Ohio to attend classes at Tri-C. Since then, his work has been featured in The New York Times, USA Today and The Guardian — and around the world.

In 2006, he moved to New York City and married Jennifer, the “girl of his dreams.” Five months after they were married she was diagnosed with breast cancer, which became the inspiration for his current body of work.

The experience cemented Merendino’s belief that photographers have a responsibility to honestly portray the people, places and times they are documenting.

These photographs show the reaction from people as they pass Jennifer, bald and using a walker in New York City, where the young couple lived until her death in the winter of 2011.
