METAMORPHOSIS: A Benefit for the Nagy Family

February 3, 2012

METAMORPHOSIS is a “One-Night-Only” benefit featuring a silent auction of dozens of local artists’ work, a raffle and more for local artist John L. Nagy and his family. John was recently severely injured on the job. He fell off his 15 foot ladder landing hard on his ankles, requiring surgery on both. John works for himself doing painting and home repair and is the primary income earner for his wife Shelly and young son Ivan. The family had just moved back to Cleveland after a brief stint in Oregon this summer after John graduated from Cleveland State in the spring. He does not have insurance and will be unable to walk for months. All income from METAMORPHOSIS will go to cover medical bills and family expenses.

On Saturday February 4th Arts Collinwood’s gallery will be filled with dozens of works by dozens of local artists in support of John and his family. Starting bids on all works will begin at $20.00 and bidding will continue until 11pm. Meanwhile, Arts Collinwood’s cafe walls will feature the work of John himself. We urge you to enjoy a meal and a drink or two in the cafe while you’re here, as a portion of your bill will be donated to the Nagy family. We hope you’ll come meet the Nagy family for yourself on February 4th if you dont know them already. We’re sure you’ll understand why we all feel this family deserves as much love and support as possible right now.

International Street Artists
at the new William Rupnik Gallery
Opening Reception: Saturday, Nov 5, 7 – 10pm
1117 Euclid Avenue (our future neighbors)

Banksy (UK), Invader (France), Vhils (Portugal), Blyu (Argentina), and Shepard Fairey (USA)

“These artists are part of a changing tide for visual art in the modern age, where “street art” is being embraced and accepted as a viable blue-chip commodity, evident by record sales at such prestigious auction houses Sotheby’s and Bonhams. As such, modern expressionists Banksy and Shepard Fairey are becoming household names, now recognized as pop masters along the likes of such legendary artists Jasper Johns, Roy Lichenstein, Jean-Michael Basquiat, and Andy Warhol. Invader, Blu and Vhils are fast advancing to the same stature, as the interest in “street art” expands well beyond the mediums of paint and canvas…”  Read more about the exhibition on William Rupnik Gallery’s website.

If you’re not familiar with street art, the controversial film Exit Through the Gift Shop is a great place to start.  It’s available instantly on Netflix.

SPACES Annual Benefit and Art Auction
Saturday, starting @ 7pm
Prices and starting times staggered (more)

I’m looking forward to seeing the William Rupnik Gallery show, but it won’t be this Saturday for me.  I’ll be at Pop Royalty, SPACES annual benefit  on Saturday evening.  I have a piece in the benefit auction.  And I’m not the only one.  Over 150 artists donated work to raise money to support SPACES mission of “featuring fantastic projects, brilliant artists and neck-craning programming” to northeastern Ohio.  Many of those works are part of the 12×12 sale: work that is 12″ square and available for a flat $75.  CSU photo guy Andrew Elaban is one such donating artist.  Did I mention the theme of the event is Pop?  Pop art, soda pop, pop music, popcorn…I bought the worst ever shirt just for the event – a grid of Warholian Batman signs.  God awful.  I can’t wait. Tell them you’re coming on their Facebook Page.  See you there?

Asterisk Gallery Benefit

November 10, 2009

Dana Deprew is planning Asterisk Gallery’s 5th Annual Benefit.  He is looking for artists to donate a work.  He is especially interested in featuring artists who’ve taken part in exhibitions over the past year as a sort of showcase.  That includes many of you who were included in the Image + Object exhibition.  (Photo III: this will count as 1 local exhibition requirement).

All work is auctioned with bids starting at $30.  So not only is this a great opportunity to support an important community arts organization in our area, its also a chance to pick up some new art for your pad at a great price.

Silent Bidding starts on Fri, Dec 11, 5-10pm and ends Sat, Dec 12, 6-11pm.
