2018 Cleveland Print Room Juried Exhibition: THE PEER SHOW.

DEADLINE: Tuesday, May 29 at 6pm.

The Cleveland Print Room is seeking photographic submissions for our juried exhibition, June 8 – July 28, to be judged this year by Jennifer Coleman, The George Gund Foundations’s Senior Program Officer for the Arts, and Lillian Kuri, Cleveland Foundation’s Vice President of Strategic Grantmaking, Arts & Urban Design Initiatives.

This is a unique opportunity for photographic artists to exhibit their work and receive substantial exposure in Cleveland’s only dedicated photographic art gallery, community darkroom, educational center, and studio workspace. Over 30 selected works will be exhibited in our gallery, with a top prize of $300 to be awarded. All selections and cash awards will be made at the discretion of the jurors and will be final.

ELIGIBILITY:

Artists must be at least 16 years of age and reside in the US or Canada.

An entry fee of $30 for CPR members or $35 for non-members is payable upon submission of works. Artists may submit up to two (2) pieces of original art in any photographic medium, analog or digital. Entry fees are non-refundable.

We prefer to judge entries in person as they would be presented in our gallery, so all work from entrants residing within 50 miles must hand-deliver their submissions to the Cleveland Print Room. All others should send high quality digital images (.jpg or .png) with filenames including the artist name and title of the work along with their completed entry form to info@clevelandprintroom.com. Entry fees may also be paid via PayPal to info@clevelandprintroom.com — PLEASE SPECIFY “PEER SHOW” in the Note field.

Work drop-off dates are Thursday, MAY 24, 12 to 6pm; Friday, MAY 25, 12 to 6pm; Saturday, MAY 26, 12-5pm; Tuesday, MAY 29, 12 to 6pm; and Wednesday, MAY 30, 3 to 6pm.

Artists whose work has been judged into the show will be contacted by midnight of Friday June 1.

Work not accepted MUST be picked up on Saturday June 2, 10am to 2pm; Sunday, June 3, 12 to 3pm; or Tuesday, June 5, noon to 6pm.

***All work must be READY TO HANG from typical gallery picture hooks without needing special equipment, and framed pieces should be strung with picture wire. Presentation is important! Please do not use cheap plastic frames with keyhole or sawtooth hangers on the back. CPR reserves the right to refuse artwork that is NOT ready to hang.***

Artists must complete a two-part entry form, one part to be attached to the work, and one part given to CPR at drop-off time. The entry form can be found here:

Work exceeding 36 inches in any dimension may be excluded due to space restrictions. Work may not exceed seventy pounds in weight.

All work must be original, executed within the last 5 years, and not have been exhibited previously at the Cleveland Print Room.

All subject matter must be appropriate for all-ages public viewing.

Entries must remain in the gallery for the duration of the exhibition.

Entrants grant permission for Cleveland Print Room to use their images and information in promotional materials.

Cleveland Print Room will retain a 40% commission from works sold. In the event of a sale, the artist will be notified at the closing of the exhibition and mailed a check for 60% of the sale within 30 days.

Spitball was Co-curated by the Loop’s Kory Gasser and CPR’s Shari Wilkins, Spitball features photographers age 30 and under.

The exhibition features CSU photo alumni, including Aja Grant, Alena Rosa Reyes and Anna Tararova. Other artists include Matt Beckwith, Kat Cade, Melissa Sue Jeffrey, Herald Martin, Jesse Mervis,  Jamie Richey, Alison Scarpulla, Melissa Schwachenwald Raymond Scott, Manda Specht, Kate Sweeney, Chad Tindel, and Jessica Will.

Compositional Guidelines (Not Rules)

There are no unbreakable rules when it comes to how you should compose your photographs After all, who likes rules except for your old school principal or heads of H.R. departments? There are however, several guidelines you can use to help improve the composition of your photos. In this tutorial, I’ve listed 20 of these guidelines along with examples of each. I’ve started with the most basic ones and finished with some of the more advanced composition techniques.

First of all we have to define what is meant by ‘composition’. Composition refers to the way the various elements in a scene are arranged within the frame. As I’ve already mentioned, these are not hard and fast rules but guidelines. That said, many of them have been used in art for thousands of years and they really do help achieve more attractive compositions. I find that I usually have one or more of these guidelines in the back of my mind as I’m setting up a shot.

Taxel Image Group Seeking Photo Interns

 

Taxel Image Group offers intern positions for college photography majors coordinated with the winter-spring, summer, and fall-winter terms.

The program is personalized, with a commitment of 10 – 20 hours per week for approximately 15 weeks.

Interns observe and participate in all aspects of the studio operation. Students come from Kent State University, Cuyahoga Community College, Cleveland Institute of Art, Case Western Reserve University, Ohio University, and other institutions, meeting the internship requirements of their curriculum.

There is no monetary compensations for this program.

Interviews for the internship are conducted year round. Students who are interested in this program can schedule an appointment by email or phone.

Dawoud Bey (b. 1953, New York, NY) began his career as an artist in 1975 with a series of photographs, “Harlem, USA,” that were later exhibited in his first one-person exhibition at the Studio Museum in Harlem in 1979. Since that time exhibitions have included a mid-career survey of his work, “Dawoud Bey: Portraits 1975-1995,” and a survey exhibition in 2012 “Dawoud Bey: Picturing People.” Additionally, Bey’s critical writings include High Times Hard Times: New York Painting, 1967- 1975, The Van DerZee Studio, and David Hammons: Been There Done That. In 2018 a major forty-year retrospective monograph, Dawoud Bey: Seeing Deeply, will be published by the University of Texas Press.

Dawoud Bey photographs people and things that may otherwise be taken for granted. A 2017 MacArthur Fellow recipient, Bey features subjects who he says “are not always in the larger social conversation.” For the FRONT Triennial, Dawoud Bey’s exhibition will expand the notion of the documentary nature of photography and question the limits of historical reportage. At The Glenville Exchanges, Bey will have a dialog with youth photographers Jasmine, 17, Lai Lai, 17 and Yonnie, 19, who themselves are sometimes the subjects, to find voice through the lens of a camera. Often, these youth do not have the historical knowledge, coping skills, or benefits of having open, honest dialogue, and so have found expression in Shooting Without Bullets. The arts-based program, brain-child of artist-activist and youth advocate, Amanda King, assists black and brown teens to process complex social problems experienced by them and provides a radical platform to speak through artistic expression. Cleveland Print Room is excited to host a joint exhibition featuring the Cleveland debut of internationally-shown, NYC-based artist Lissa Rivera, and new work by Cleveland artist Laura Ruth Bidwell.

“Beautiful Boy,” the ongoing project of Lissa Rivera, focuses, as she writes, “on my domestic partner as muse, documenting our exploration of femininity and the nuances of photography as a transformative medium. I am using photography as a testing ground for my partner, who is genderqueer, to visualize multiple feminine identities. The photographs provide a canvas to investigate the visual language of womanhood that I was raised with, and that my partner is only beginning to explore. Through watching movies, listening to music and viewing countless photographs, I‘ve absorbed an archive of techniques to share. The photographs recall childhood fantasies of dressing up, tapping into deep-seated narratives about desire, beauty, freedom and cultural taboo. Although our emotional relationship is private and real, we perform a romanticism that is obsessive and decadent. The fantasy of dressing up transforms the experience of being photographed into one that fuses identity-creation with image-creation.” Rivera is represented by ClampArt. Come meet AIRconnect, international artist-in-residence, Jonny Lyons from Glasgow, Scotland and see what he has created during his stay in Cleveland. His work is a direct response from Lyons time in Cleveland, people he has met through street photography, walking the streets and the stories they have shared together. From this sculptural work, he has created and staged short performances within the Cleveland landscape documented with analogue photography.

He has worked at Cleveland Print Room, Zygote Press and Praxis.

Jonny’s practice explores the fragility of friendship and adventure through performances documented by photography and film. He often creates ingenious devices, or functioning sculptures, to execute his ‘hand-crafted mischief’ which are presented – having fulfilled their one purpose – as relics of the event, together with the photographic evidence. But the photographs are not simply documentation of a sequence of anarchic events. They fix the moment between ’cause’ and ‘effect’ and are imbued with wit, melancholy and the physical humour of early silent cinema. In carrying out these processes, collaborations and journeys Lyons attempts to reconcile reckless youth with the pressures of adulthood; these are snap-shots of ‘Lost Boys’ putting their most dangerous, outlandish ideas into practice and – one feels, with some luck – getting away with it.

Special thanks to the Ohio Arts Council for funding this pilot program that not only brings an artist from Scotland to Cleveland but also sends an Ohio artist to Dundee, Scotland for 6-weeks to work at Dundee Contemporary Arts in their amazing print shop. Photography – “the art or process of producing images by the action of radiant energy and especially light on a sensitive surface (as film or an optical sensor),” is a broad field, and, in the upcoming PHOTOGRAPHY NOW – THE ART OF SEEING juried exhibition, Summit Artspace seeks to explore the range of that field. Regional photographic artists who work with film and use traditional darkroom techniques, those whose images are recorded digitally and processed on a computer, and those who push the boundaries of the medium in new directions, are all invited to enter. The only exception is that instant photography cannot be accepted, due to a concurrent exhibition which focuses on that medium.

Works from traditional to experimental and from representational to abstract are equally welcome, as are images presented on paper, transparency, through projection, or in some other format. What will unify this exhibition is that each selected work will represent the intersection of personal creativity and engagement with some form of photographic technology in order to explore the art of seeing at this moment in time, whether the gaze is turned outward or inward.

Eligibility: The exhibition is open to artists residing in or attending school in the following Ohio counties: Summit, Cuyahoga, Medina, Stark and Portage. Unfortunately, if you do not live in or attend school in one of these counties, we are unable to consider your work.
