The Cleveland Print Room invites members and non-members to submit artwork for our 2015 juried exhibition, The Peer Show.  This is a unique opportunity for photographic artists to exhibit their work and receive substantial exposure in Cleveland’s only dedicated photographic art gallery, community darkroom, educational center, and studio workspace.  Over 30 selected works will be exhibited in our gallery, with a top prize of $300 to be awarded.  All selections and cash awards will be made at the discretion of the jurors and will be final.

ELIGIBILITY:

• Artists must be at least 18 years of age and reside in the US or Canada.
• An entry fee of $25 for CPR members or $30 for non-members is payable upon submission of works. Artists may submit up to two (2) pieces of original art in any photographic medium, analog or digital.  Entry fees are non-refundable.
• All work must be READY TO HANG from typical gallery picture hooks without needing special equipment. We prefer framed pieces to be strung with picture wire.
  Artists must complete a two-part entry form, one part to be attached to the work, and one part given to CPR at drop-off time.
• The entry form can be found here.
• Work exceeding 36 inches in any dimension may be excluded due to space restrictions.  Work may not exceed seventy pounds in weight.
• All work must be original, executed within the last 5 years, and not been shown previously at the Cleveland Print Room.
• All work must be hand-delivered to the Cleveland Print Room during normal business hours: Noon to 6pm, Tuesday and Thursday through Saturday; 3pm to 6pm, Wednesday.
• All subject matter must be appropriate for public viewing.
• Entries must remain in the gallery for the duration of the exhibition.
• Artists must grant permission for Cleveland Print Room to use their images and information in promotional materials.
• Cleveland Print Room will retain a 40% commission from works sold. In the event of a sale, the artist will be notified at the closing of the exhibition and mailed a check for 60% of the sale within 30 days.

  TIMELINE:
  April 28, 2015: Works may begin to be dropped off at Cleveland Print Room.

• May 16, 2015: Deadline for Entry Dropoff
• June 4, 2015: Notification of juror’s selections
• June 6, 2015:  Deadline for pick-up of non-selected artwork
• June 12, 2015:  Exhibition Opening Reception
• July 11, 2015: Exhibition Closing
• All unsold work from the exhibition MUST BE PICKED UP by Saturday, July 25, 2011. Any artwork left at Cleveland Print Room beyond that date will be disposed of at the discretion of CPR.
• Work not selected for the exhibition MUST BE PICKED UP by Saturday, June 6, 2015.

Busta Gallery Changing Hands

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The highly respected art dealer William Busta jolted the region’s art scene in January when he announced he would close his gallery in August and retire after 26 years in the business and hundreds of definitive shows on works by artists of Northeast Ohio.

Therefore, it may have been some comfort to local art aficionados earlier this month when Busta announced that Independence entrepreneur John Davies and his sister, Lauren Davies, an artist and former exhibit director of a non-profit gallery in Berkeley, Calif., would take over his gallery space at 2731 Prospect Ave. after he left.

Under its new ownership, the space will be called 2731 Prospect Gallery, and will open Sept. 18 with its first shows.

Pittsburgh-based artist April Friges will be visiting CSU photo next Thursday during ART 332 / 432. April’s recent work experiments with the photograph as image and form. The visit coincide’s with ART 432’s Other Output project, which encourages pushing the conventions of photography beyond the expected digital capture to digital output.

April received her MFA from University of California, Irvine and her BFA from the University of Akron. She is currently an Assistant Professor at Point Park University. Visit her website: aprilfriges.com.

How do you capture a moment? Kyle Rideout’s biopic EADWEARD (2014) shows how this question becomes an obsession of one of the forefathers of motion pictures, Eadweard Muybridge. In 1872, Muybridge reveals hisfirst study of animal locomotion: a series of photos depicting the movements of a running horse that no human eye had ever seen. “This is life,” he explains to his admiring audience. But Muybridge wants to know more. His passion compels Flora, a sultry 21-year-old divorcée, to move with Muybridge from California to Pennsylvania, where he has secured $50,000 to take more pictures. Although Muybridge considers his work to be science, not art, the resulting photographic sequences—of a woman jumping over a stool, a man walking a goat, two men boxing, and so on—are undeniably beautiful. Still, as Muybridge amasses thousands of images depicting life, his own life with Flora begins to unravel. In this impressive first film, Rideout uses time-lapse photography, jump cuts, and slow motion to recreate the magic of Muybridge’s photography.

Herb Ritts Photography at Rock Hall

Herb Ritts: The Rock Portraits

The work of renowned photographer Herb Ritts (1952-2002) will be featured in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum’s newest exhibit, Herb Ritts: The Rock Portraits, which will open on Fri., Mar. 13, 2015. Presented in collaboration with the Herb Ritts Foundation, the exhibit includes 30 never-before-seen photographs, original video footage, contact sheets with Ritts’ red-pencil markings, new video interviews and other well-known portraits from the revolutionary photographer and filmmakers’ collection.

Ritts was a part of the first movement of still photographers who became directors of music videos and television commercials. Alongside Ritts’ bold portraits, visitors will see new exclusive interviews by the Rock Hall with Chris Isaak sharing what it was like to film the famously seductive “Wicked Game” music video and k.d. lang recalling her groundbreaking Vanity Fair cover shoot with supermodel Cindy Crawford.

The Rock Portraits exhibit will also include firsthand accounts from musicians on what it was like to work with Ritts, a sampling of his award-winning music videos, and interactive stations including a collection of album covers he shot. Visitors will also be able to photograph themselves in a backdrop from one of Ritts’ most famous beach photos.

Greg Harris, president and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, says “We were given unprecedented access to the vast Ritts archives and the result is stunning. This provocative exhibition is a testament to the visceral power of both photography and rock and roll.  It is not to be missed.”

“Having an exhibit that showcases the world of rock through his inimitable lens, capturing rare, unguarded moments with some of the biggest names in music history is a first for the Herb Ritts Foundation and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is the perfect place for it to debut,” adds Mark McKenna, Executive Director of the Herb Ritts Foundation.

Ritts photographed some of the world’s biggest music stars. He made startlingly intimate portraits that showed artists as the world had never seen them. Never-before-seen photographs of artists that will be featured in The Rock Portraits exhibit include:

Ritts began his photographic career in the late 70s and gained a reputation as a master of art and commercial photography. In addition to producing portraits and editorial fashion for Vogue, Vanity Fair, Interview and Rolling Stone, Ritts also created successful advertising campaigns for Calvin Klein, Chanel, Donna Karan, Gap, Gianfranco Ferré, Gianni Versace, Giorgio Armani, Levi’s, Pirelli, Polo Ralph Lauren and Valentino among others. Starting in 1988, he directed numerous influential and award winning music videos and commercials. His fine art photography has been the subject of exhibitions worldwide with works residing in many significant public and private collections.
