Opening this Thursday: You Will Find Luck When You Go Home
Pablo Serra Marino
Cleveland Print Room
On Thursday, November 20, from 5 – 8pm, the Cleveland Print Room’s Fall 2014 Cleveland
Foundation Creative Fusion artist-in-residence from Chile, Pablo Serra Marino, will be presenting the work he’s been creating during his time here in Cleveland. In this exhibition, entitled “You Will Find Luck When You Go Home,” Serra focuses on the impossible task of digesting the myriad of information from a different culture. His work speaks to the concept of being a stranger in a strange land, with emphasis on the problems of dealing with things on a surface level.During Serra’s residency he has also regularly worked in Cleveland Heights with Lake Erie Ink’s “The Inkspotters” after-school program. Serra taught the students basic drawing skills and techniques; they then made masks and character drawings, and completed a large collaborative piece, entitled “The Front Cover,” that will be exhibited on our walls at the opening. Also opening alongside Serra’s work will be an exhibition of work by talented high school students enrolled in the Saint Martin De Porres High School after-school photography program taught by Donald Black Jr. The students’ contribution features work that was shot in Cleveland. The students learned B&W photography basics, developing and printing in the darkroom. Their resulting prints are truly stunning. These shows, demonstrating the Print Room’s desire to work with communities both locally and globally, will be running through Thanksgiving. Come check them out!

The opening reception will take place on Thursday, November 20th from 5-8pm.

Serra will also be giving an artist talk presentation in our gallery on Saturday, November 22 at 1pm.

SPE Photo Exhibition in Cool Cleveland

November 12, 2014

Screen Shot 2014-10-22 at 9.58.00 AM

Off the Web, On the Wall: An SPE Member Show
Nov 14, 2014 – Apr 10, 2015
Opening Reception: November 14, 2014, 5-8pm

SPE National Office
The ArtCraft Building
2530 Superior Ave #403
Cleveland, OH 44114

Since 2007, the Society for Photographic Education (SPE) has been headquartered in Cleveland. This international organization is 50 years old, established as a go-to organization for those that teach photography at the college or graduate level, although these days members include those that teach on the high school level.

Having moved into the space a year ago, SPE debuted the gallery space with their first exhibition this past summer. SPE’s next and upcoming Cleveland exhibition features work curated from the society’s online member gallery and represents members from each of SPE’s regional chapters, international membership and its caucuses (LGBTQ, Multicultural, and Women’s), including photographers from across the Atlantic to right here in NEO and many places in between.

Executive Director Virginia Morrison oozes with excitement, “Some of the printing that is in this particular grouping is just exquisite…it takes my breath away. In curating this show, we took the work from our online member portfolios and we thought, ‘Now, this is something we want to showcase and put together in a show.’ Usually, we see these photos basically on our computer screen or thumbnail. There’s a huge difference in the viewers’ experience when looking at a screen of the work versus looking at an actual printed piece. In part of the show, we run the exhibiting artists’ online portfolios on a TV screen so people can see first digital images that were turning our heads. We then parlay that experience into the real in-person physical printed piece.”
