William Mortensen at Buckland Museum

October 11, 2019

Mort3

William Mortensen’s manipulated photographs are on exhibit at the Buckland Museum in Cleveland. The exhibition, titled “Witches” is just in time for Halloween. Mortensen began his career as a glamor and film still photographer in the 1920s. He soon turned to darker themes influenced by horror films. But it was his pictorialist compositing techniques that caused the photography-purist Ansel Adams to call him the Anti-christ.

The exhibition and venue are featured on WCPN Ideastream. The Buckland Museum of Witchcraft and Magick was founded in New York in 1966 and relocated to Cleveland in 2015. More about William Mortensen here. More details about the exhibition here.

The Sound of Ideas discussed the impact of the arts on the national and local economies:

Many of us recognize the value of the arts for entertainment and cultural fulfillment. Now, for the first time, the federal government says it can quantify the economic impact of the arts: $504 billion, or 3.2 percent of the U.S. Gross Domestic Product. Now that’s a blockbuster. We’ll talk about how the number was derived with the lead analyst at the National Endowement for the Arts Wednesday at 9:00 on The Sound of Ideas, and examine the impact of the arts locally. Join host Mike McIntyre.

The Sound of Applause interviewed Cleveland Museum of Art Interim Director and Transformer Station cofounder, Fred Bidwell. It’s the second segment of the program.

Fred also discusses the future of the Cleveland Museum of Art in an interview on the CMA blog.
