DIY: Photographers & Books

April 4, 2012

Cleveland Museum of Art
August 11–December 30, 2012
Photography Gallery

A new golden age of the photobook has dawned, thanks to digital printing technology and web-based distribution services that allow rapid, inexpensive production of books in quantities from one copy to thousands. This exhibition is the first museum show to focus on the impact of print-on-demand publishing on contemporary photographic practice. Instead of images on the wall, the room will be dominated by a long table where a visual banquet of more than 75 photobooks will await the visitor. Several examples of historic and unique books will be in cases, but for most of the volumes, touching, reading, and re-reading will be encouraged. The books will be by regional, national, and international artists. Plans include a computer station where visitors can try their own hand at producing a photobook. This exhibition honors the 60th anniversary of Aperture magazine and press.

The Cleveland Museum of Art is generously funded by Cuyahoga County residents through Cuyahoga Arts and Culture. The Ohio Arts Council helped fund this exhibition with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence, and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans.

Submissions to DIY

Barbara Tannenbaum, curator of photography at the Cleveland Museum of Art, invites submissions for the first museum exhibition to focus on print-on-demand books. DIY: Photographers & Books will take place fall/winter 2012.

Submit your print-on-demand photography book to the following address before May 31, 2012:

DIY: Photographers & Books
The Cleveland Museum of Art
11150 East Boulevard
Cleveland OH 44106 USA

Questions: E-mail photography@clevelandart.org.

Please do not send one-of-a-kind or handcrafted books. Not all submissions will be included in the exhibition. Books will not be returned. Following the exhibition, all submissions will be donated to the library of the Cleveland Institute of Art.

Barbara Tannenbaum has made a special effort to reach out to photography programs in our region. She is asking for student participation for this exhibition. This is a great opportunity. Read about Barbara’s visit to CSU photo to present on POD photography books.

Exhibition Opportunity…

May 24, 2010

…and it’s FREE, and it’s exclusively for STUDENTS, and it’s based in NYC!

International Deadline: June 16, 2010
Chelsea’s Michael Mazzeo Gallery announces RSVP: Class Pictures.
Artists are currently invited to submit work for consideration in Class Pictures, an RSVP online exhibition of exceptional work by currently enrolled students of undergraduate photography programs. Students may submit up to five images from a single project.
As the school year winds down, educators like myself have the pleasure of reveling in the birth of projects that have been gestating in classrooms, darkrooms, studios and computer labs for the past year. Challenged by rigorous institutional demands and the need to create compelling work while maintaining their individuality, students’ progress and achievements become evident in the richness and diversity of their final portfolio presentations. In an effort to bring some of this work to a wider audience, we will present a selection of extraordinary work by a few of these outstanding students.
The names of those involved in the selection process will be posted here in the coming days.
RSVP is a Michael Mazzeo Gallery program of curated online exhibitions. By way of call and response initiated on the gallery blog, artists are asked to submit images to be considered for inclusion in specific, themed shows. RSVP exhibitions are handled in the same professional and enthusiastic manner as the gallerys on-site exhibitions, with advertising and sales efforts, on-demand printed catalogs and gallery support.
It is important to note that this is not a pay-to-play program and the exhibitions are not ‘competitions’.
There is no charge for entries.
There is no charge for inclusion in exhibitions.
There is no charge for inclusion in exhibition catalogs.
