Alena Reyes Solo Show at Double Feature Gallery

December 8, 2011

Double Feature Gallery (link to address)
December 17, 2011, Reception: 6pm – 12am

CSU photo alumna Alena Reyes will unveil the first phase of her ongoing Marilyn Project at Double Feature Gallery in the Gordon Square Arts District.

Alena  photographs all kinds of people  – young, old, black, Hispanic, transgender, thin and large  – as intimate psychological portraits of Marilyn Monroe. According to the artist, she aims to:

explore cultural ideas of beauty and femininity and deconstruct an icon by challenging people’s impressions of who they thought this person was. In doing I am making a larger point of the contrast between how women in general are depicted and who they really are. …  [most women] are taught to believe their sexuality and desirability is their biggest commodity, which is why I made a point of photographing people who may not be considered conventionally beautiful as one of the biggest sex symbols of all time to raise a larger question of who and what society considers attractive.
